SINGAPORE CHILD’S RULES

In Singapore, all passengers under 1.35m in height (regardless of age) must be properly secured in an approved child restraint or booster seat. Children below 8 years old are legally required to use a car seat. Drivers who fail to comply face up to a S$1,000 fine and 3 demerit points.Key Regulations & Exemptions.Height vs. Age: The primary rule is height. Once a child hits 1.35m, they can use a standard adult seat belt, even if they are under 8.Taxis: Licensed taxis (e.g., ComfortDelGro, Strides) are exempt from child seat requirements for passengers over 1 year old, provided the child sits in the rear and wears a seat belt. However, using an appropriate seat is strongly encouraged..Private Hire Vehicles: Rideshares like Grab and Gojek are NOT exempt. You must use a child seat/booster if your child is under 1.35m.Approved Standards: Child seats must meet approved international safety standards, such as European (ECE R44 or R129), American (FMVSS 213), or Japanese regulations..Seating Position. Children 12 years old and below should not sit in the front passenger seat. Never place a rear-facing infant seat in the front seat if an active airbag is present. For the complete and updated list of approved safety standards, you can check the Singapore Police Force Review of Standards for Child Restraints announcement or review the official Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Wearing of Seat Belts) Rules via Singapore Statutes Online.
